  1. Got a couple og gear Questions for you if you don’t mind:

Do you know if Resolve will recognize a GPU card in a TB expansion chassis? Like a GTX690 card? Have you ever tried a setup like that?

I am guessing you have a Decklink card for SDI out to your FSI monitor? And that must be in an expansion chassis? If so what card do you use?

    1. as of now, thunderbolt 1.0 does not support GPU over TB. TB2.0 however does, which is how the new MacBook is going to operate. I use a UltraStudio Express for my SDI out and in.

  2. Aloha again from Hawaii,

Hopefully you can find some time to answer a few Resolve questions that have been bugging me…I was wondering how you deal with 3 things, things I know Assimilate Scratch does easily and I am hoping Resolve can do too, as I know Resolve well and would rather stick with using it for Dailies.

    1. With GoPro or similar footage that does not generate usable timecode…how do you deal with generating timecode for those files?

    2. When editing Raw data, in Scratch there is a list view that allows for essentially copy/pasting say Kelvin to numerous clips at once. I am not sure how to do this and other RAW data in Resolve.

    3. Also in Scratch the list view allows for moving data around and rename clips with “editor friendly names” while still allowing for re-conforming after the edit. Is this type of thing possible in Resolve?

    Mahalo for your time.

    1. 1. I just end up using the clip TC for the dailies, but I also let people know ahead of time that that will be the case.

      2. No not really, not that I’m aware of. You would have to do it take by take or just create a still with the kelvin change then apply it to all of the clips. You might be able to select all of the clips and then change it but I’m not sure.

      3. Not possible as far as I know. I always render dailies with the original file name and then let editorial make those adjustments in their editing program as for whatever they want.

  3. OK, obsessing on your gear list again and I have 2 more questions if you don’t mind:

    1. What SAS RAID do you use and what size do you work with?

    2. I see you have a Leader 5330, which is an awesome piece of equipment. But, it is expensive and I am wondering if I can get away with the scopes in Resolve or the scopes on the FSI. Do you find those lacking?

    Aloha

    1. I use the 4 bay OWC 1RU SAS Raid, it’s pretty awesome but it can be slow if you don’t have fast drives. I’m upgrading to a TB2 OWC enclosure.

You can use those scopes but the cinezone is pretty clutch on the 5330. Also it makes tandem units or driving shots pretty manageable as you can just bring the 5330 with you an not have to worry about trying to figure out how to lug your whole cart around.

      1. Thanks for all the answers! I have had my eye on that OWC ThunderBay 4, I use OWC for all my working drives and have for some time.

I use Resolve a lot and will probably wind up using it for my Dailies as I know it well, at least for grading. Scratch has a few advantages, really just those listed above, and maybe I’ll find some workarounds, or pester them to add these capabilities.

DIT – Dork In a Tent – love it!

  4. With you two IS-Mini LUT boxes are you just always hardline to the camera when you have to live grade or are you doing something else to avoid being hard lined?
